Dog belly buttons November 1, 2006

Yesterday Ella asked Mary why dogs don’t have belly buttons. Upon some thought I had to admit that I couldn’t fully answer this. It’s a darn good question. I mean, they don’t have umbilical cords when they come out, so that explains the lack of belly button, but how does a puppy get the necessary nutrients while in the mommy dog? I have no idea.

She also asked separately why poop is brown. Can’t say I know (or want to know) the answer in any detail.

She stumped us twice in one day!

Duck-eating owls March 12, 2006

Went to a “critter conservation” event today over at the Kirkwood Community Center. Basically just a bunch of different organizations that do wildlife rehab or different animal groups and there were a bunch of animals there. The kids got to touch a snake, turtle, lizard, iguana, parrot, parakeet, rabbit, goat, etc.

They had the largest bunny I’ve ever seen, easily bigger than our two cats put together. And they had a couple coatimundi which were hopping all over their cage and trying to grab anything in reach.

Ella said the snake was her favorite and it was pretty cool. Mary and I definitely liked the screech owl the best though. Owls are just so cool.

These guys are pretty little but the woman was telling us that they have been known to kill ducks. They sit on a tree above a sleeping duck, then swoop down with their feet balled into a fist and hit them in the back of the head. This stuns them so that the owl can bite through the back of the neck and break their neck, at which point they can eat what they want. That is totally awesome and kind of creepy.
