Frank Zappa on Crossfire (1986) April 25, 2006

After all of Nick’s postings related to Frank Zappa and the Zappa boys (that’d be a good name “The Zappa Boys”) I ran across this video of Frank Zappa on Crossfire in 1986. It’s a debate of sorts about the legislation where they banned the 7 dirty words. Totally awesome.

New music page April 24, 2006

I’ve got a new music page up in my links. It’s got some feeds in it from last.fm and their AudioScrobbler service. It’s kinda cool – plugs into your iTunes (or other player) and sends your play info to their web site. They aggregate all that info and put it on your personal page. Then they can recommend stuff to you based on all the people using it. Pretty cool over all.

You can also do chat and make groups and other stuff that seems pretty useless to me, but that’s just me. The recommendations and personal streaming radio are great ideas though.

Trumanisms April 19, 2006

Filed under: family — Alex @ 10:13 pm

Whenever Truman hears a siren he now says “everybody hurts” meaning “somebody is hurt”. Except it really sounds more like “e’body. urts!” with an accent on “urts”.

He’s also been really scared lately of all kind of insects, particularly bees and ants. I’m pretty sure the fear of bees traces back to Winnie the Pooh where Pooh gets chased by bees. Somehow that transferred to ants. He says “ants. urts!” and will come running.

Every since he first started talking, Truman loved “old mcdonald had a farm” and would say the “e-i-e-i-o” part. Somehow all farmers or actually all people wearing straw hats of any kind became referred to with an abbreviated form of e-i-e-i-o that sounds kind of like “yai-yo”. He still does this now, many months later whenever he sees a farmer toy or a picture of a farmer. It’s morphed enough that it would likely be incomprehensible to anyone other than us.

Tru man talking April 12, 2006

Filed under: family — Alex @ 9:12 pm

Truman has been talking up a storm lately. He seems to be concentrating really hard too sometimes – his brow furrows and he talks very precisely. He tends to say things in the form “Poppins. Watch it.” which means he wants to watch Mary Poppins. Or “Water. Drink it.” He sounds like a commercial. He really knows an amazing number of words – seems like he’s way ahead of where Ella was at this age.

His most recent fascination is with the CD player in his room. He pulls a chair over to the CD player, then climbs up and presses all the buttons. He knows how to open it up, put the CD in, turn it on, start the music, etc. He does it over and over.

I had an awesome surreal conversation with Ella the other day. She was taking a turn trying to work the CD player and she accidentally opened the cassette player.

Ella: What’s that?
me: That’s a cassette player. You’ll probably have no idea what that is when you grow up.
Ella: I know what a ’sette player is.
me: Really? What is it?
Ella (knowingly): It’s a secret about a duck.

Honestly – that’s almost word for word.
