Housekeeping February 24, 2006

Filed under: blog — Alex @ 10:37 pm

Lots of blog housekeeping in the last couple days, namely I have split the prior posts into two blogs – this one will now be personal stuff only. I’ve moved all the technical stuff that was on here before off to the brand new Pure Danger Tech blog.

Also, I’ve changed themes here to a theme that just came out. I find it calming but Mary said it doesn’t reflect my life right now. She said it should have “sharp knives” or something. :) So, maybe I’ll try to find one like that….

Terry Gilliam interview on BBC February 22, 2006

Filed under: movie — Alex @ 11:44 pm

Ran across this interesting interview with Terry Gilliam that talks about his problems with financing films.

This is particularly interesting if you’re familiar with the problems he had making Don Quixote as memorialized in the documentary Lost in La Mancha. I’ve seen the documentary and it’s really sad seeing them struggle against financial (and other) problems and finally just giving up. Wish I could have seen it.

Here’s a picture from an old video from high school. Due to legal restrictions, I’m not allowed to explain the context, but I thought you might enjoy it.

Clifford time February 14, 2006

Filed under: family, picture — Alex @ 9:47 pm

During our open house on Sunday, we took the kids to the Magic House to see Clifford (or “fifford” as Truman says). We’ve been to a couple of these special exhibits before for the Peanuts and Arthur, and this one was by far the best. It was a lot more interactive and had a better mix of stuff for younger and older kids.

Both Ella and Truman had a great time and were fully engaged for probably an hour. They liked playing with the mail in the mailboxes, the pretend food in the diner, and the bones that you could use to fill up Clifford’s big bowl. Truman especially had a great time helping other kids in moving the bones up and down the conveyor belt – he worked really hard and seemed to know just what to do.

See the picture page for some pics.

Mary asks: How do Jolly Ranchers get their name? February 12, 2006

Filed under: mary asks — Alex @ 7:46 pm
Often, my wife asks me very good questions. I usually don’t know the answer. Sometimes I just make one up but she rarely buys it. So these days I usually reach for Google and read it off. Amazing what you can learn this way.
Mary: How do Jolly Ranchers get their name?
Web: Found the answer on the Hershey site (makers of Jolly Rancher) at http://www.hersheys.com/products/details/jollyrancher.asp.

The Jolly Rancher Candy Company was founded in Golden, Colorado, by Bill and Dorothy Harmsen in 1949. They called the company Jolly Rancher to suggest a hospitable, western company. The company originally made ice cream, chocolate and hard candy. As hard candy sales grew, however, they began to concentrate on developing their “Famous for Flavor” line of hard candies.

In 1966, the Harmsens sold Jolly Rancher to Beatrice Foods, but the family continued to be involved in the day-to-day operation of the business. Leaf purchased Jolly Rancher in 1983. Hershey Foods Corporation acquired the Leaf North American confectionery operations from Huhtamaki Oy of Helsinki, Finland in 1996.
